MORE than 250 people attended a dinner at the Novotel Northbeach last night to celebrate the 15th anniversary of community networking body The Illawarra Connection.

President Roger Summerill said TIC was formed in 1993 to bring together leaders from fields including business, academia, government and religion.

"It provides an opportunity for people to network and help the Illawarra achieve its full potential," he said.

Mr Summerill took over the TIC helm from foundation president Peter Kell in 2006.

TIC's first guest speaker was former New Zealand prime minister David Lange.

Last night's guest speaker was adventurer and author Tim Cope, who Australian Geographic named Young Australian Adventurer of the Year in 2002 and Adventurer of the Year in 2006.

From 2004 to 2007 Mr Cope travelled by horse from Mongolia to Hungary.
